Spaces & Traces 2010: Brewers Hill & The Beerline - A Review

Brewers’ Hill & The Beerline—where old meets the new!
The Old: Brewers’ Hill is among the city’s oldest residential neighborhoods. Originally surrounded by both commercial and industrial concerns, the area developed such that business owners and laborers lived side by side. This resulted in an interesting mixture of modest worker’s cottages and duplexes interspersed among grand, high-style Greek Revival, Italianate and Queen Anne homes. The tour will take us through a similar cross section of styles and forms—many of which have been recently rehabilitated. In addition to ten homes, other historic sites include a German Renaissance Revival-style, former warehouse/factory, a Romanesque-style church, as well as portions of the Schlitz Brewery Complex.
The New: “The Beerline” is located adjacent to the Milwaukee River and N. Commerce Street, immediately east of Brewers’ Hill. The corridor got its name from the railroad line that ran along the river and served the Pabst, Blatz and Schlitz breweries, as well as other mills, tanneries and coal yards. Not long ago, the area was considered an industrial wasteland. However, a single residential development began there in 1997, which was quickly followed by the transformation of a former Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Co. building into a new home for Lakefront Brewery. The rest, of course, is history!
